German Shepherds are big dogs. They need daily exercise, mental enrichment, and a person who understands that training is lifelong. They are loyal, sensitive, active, and deeply devoted to their families—but they are not the right fit for every home.
Is a German Shepherd the right dog for you?
Dog training is an unregulated industry, so we encourage you to do your research and ask thoughtful questions when choosing a trainer. NOGSR strongly encourages the use of positive reinforcement and force-free training methods. We believe these dogs are intelligent, sensitive, and incredibly capable — and that the best results come from building trust and confidence rather than the use of aversive tools or physical coercion. When evaluating a trainer, look for someone whose approach reflects the latest science on animal behavior and learning, which continues to affirm that dogs thrive with reward-based methods.
